Application Process Example
Please note that the characters used for examples are not characters currently in play or currently applied. They were just selected to give examples of how we go through our process.

Things to note:
  1. Homer #1 is without a vote and Jade skipped straight to Spock because she doesn't know Simpsons canon, but she does know Star Trek. She's hoping that two of the other five mods will know Simpsons canon and thus be able to make more educated assessments than she can. If there's only one other Simpsons-literate mod, she may go back to read the app and provide a second vote.

  2. Cosmo has three dissenting votes, but Wanda was readily approved. Cosmo requires a fourth mod to be able to resolve the impasse and give any sort of stamp. You can see the sort of circumstance that may result in a later-submitted application being approved before an earlier one.

  3. Vanilla Ice's application was clearly problematic from the beginning, so rather than a vote, it was moved directly to discussion.

  4. Spock received a peer review with a dissenting opinion after Jade cast her reject vote. A subsequent mod could choose to agree or disagree with the peer review based on the concern about representing Spock in the application in a once-in-seven years situation as the exemplar of how he will be played.

  5. Homer app #2 was noted as being a second application so that no mods would accidentally read it and give it the thumbs up before Homer #1 was taken on its individual merits.

  6. App slot applications are color-coded so that even once they reach the supplemental requested column, they can still be distinguished from regular apps.

  7. We do this with not just seven applications at a time, but an ever-changing list that reaches between 50 and 100 depending upon the application week.

I'll have to congratulate them on a clever use of humor, definitely.

As is, it covers everything I'd accept from an app for a character like this, some peak into the thought, a good personality section, so ,approve it is.

Admittedly, I'm not really familiar with the canon, but I think that their personality and history sections are really thought out and give me a really good idea of who this guy is. Going off that, the RP sample and the log sample read really consistently with those described sections.

Spock is not in Pon farr all the time. Applying with horny!Spock as the journal and RP samples is...offputting at best.

From spockrocksmysocks

[character whose app you're reviewing]: Spock
[applicant name]: rub_my_ears
[your proposed verdict]: Accept
[app PROs]: They have his description down pat and the personality section is very accurate. They also write very well and I've seen them play in another game and they're awesome!
[app CONs]: They did pick a time from canon that only happens every seven years, so I think they need to show that they can play him during the rest of the time when he isn't in heat.

I'm not really comfortable with their apping a "real person" even if they are attributing super special Iceman-style powers to them.

Perhaps if they'd like to change the character's name, that would be a big help.

Maybe we could refer the applicant to the rule against applying for real people. I think even if they were apping Donny from the New Kids on the Block cartoon it still would require discussion. If only the name Vanilla Ice is being used then I think they should clarify that in the application or change the name entirely.

I agree. If they want to use this name, then they'll need to explain what's going on with that before it gets stamped either way.

I'm not seeing it. The personality section is pretty thorough but I'm really not seeing them actually execute it in the third person sample. It feels like that sample could be anyone else if you just put in a different name.

I wouldn't say it's OOC, though, just...lacking. So I want more.

I see what Jesse means, but being familiar with the series myself I'm not sure if we can expect more from a show like The Fairly Odd Parents. It has always been a comedy without the depth you would get from Law&Order. Most introspection would be a matter of player interpretation rather than canon.

I think if they've fallen this flat in their interpretation of Cosmo, I can't really okay it. They've also gotten canon information wrong: the type of creatures that try to usurp the fairies and turn them into something more like accountants, (they're pixies, not trolls, a fairly significant difference) and it's Cosmo's mother who wants to split Cosmo and Wanda up, not Wanda's mother.

With those issues, I vote to reject.

I say they should app this character as an OC if they want him, canon just doesn't GIVE US enough about this character to apply for them here, if at all.

2008-03-09 09:49 am UTC (link)
I checked wikipedia for a little more information on this guy and found that the personality section in this application is c/p'ed directly from wiki. Since we need to see that the applicant is actually capable of understanding their character's personality, I want to request a second write-up of the personality that shows that.

free webpage hit counterSit down, have some cake, give us your feedback on the process. Ask questions.

The process that came before this one took place in IM and required mods to be online at the same time. This way we can review whenever we're online without waiting for another mod's schedule, we have record of our conversation, which will help Spock-mun when she asks why it was rejected, and this allows us to look back when re-apps come in and see how the application has improved.

I think this is a pretty solid reviewing process. This is definitely the most organized RPG application process I've seen, and I think I've seen the fewest OOC characters here. The only down side is how long some applications can take, but considering how many there are...yikes.

A question: What happens if someone applies as a character whose canon none of the mods are familiar with? Do they just ask their friends then?

Ooh, you found us before the unveiling! XD

There are cases where it happens. We really hope that people will use peer review then. (Which reminds me that I should get a mock peer review in for one of these entries to show what happens with those.)

If none of us know the canon, then we are counting on the information sections of the application coupled with the personality section to give us something to go on. If we have time, we may poke around the wilds of the internet for more information, but as you've noted, we have a lot to deal with, so we don't always have that time.

I'm sneaky like that.

*nods* I figured it was something like that. (I was curious because I know Kaye's fandom is really obscure.) Either way, I bet between the five mods you all have a lot of fandom covered for most cases!

And thank you for letting us have a glimpse. (: It's a lot more comforting to know how it works than to keep wondering. my app babiez are changelings and wouldn't taste very good

I always guessed there was something like this in play for apps and it's really good to finally see it. I hope this stops some of the complaints about some apps being "fast tracked" and brings to light just how thorough the app process is and how closely you do look at them.

I think it's a great system for checking apps!

It's understandable that people would wonder WTF is going on when they see that their apps are being taken out of order, with later submissions being stamped before theirs. It can feel as though they're being singled out or ignored.

It was that sort of concern that led to us setting up this mock review post for people to see what's up.

When the review was taking place solely in IM, then we tried to go more in order (it kept apps from getting completely missed for one thing,) but now it means that if there's only one mod on, she can still review if she has time instead of twiddling her thumbs waiting for a second voter to show up.

After a careful review and consideration of the above information, I have to ask: Are there cat macros on the official posts, too?

Otherwise, A++, would look at sexy recreations of your secret mod activities any day.

*snicker* Actually, yes, and that's purely for my convenience. When I try to go to the app thread, I just type in the beginning of the URL in my address bar and if I get the wrong app thread, the different cat macros tell me which week I'm actually in.

Whether it actually helps the other mods? I dunno.

Ooh, now I'll put that A++ on the fridge with my crayon drawings of wannabe cat macros. ♥

Ah, I like it! It's nice to know what the app process looks like...sometimes when you're sitting around waiting for a final vertict, it can be sort of nerve wracking if it's taking a while. XD I've always trusted you guys were doing your best to cover everything, but...it's still great to know.

Also, you guys keep making me want to app some cracky cartoon character. If I pick up Daffy Duck, I'm blaming you.

Oh, I totally understand. I know what it's like firsthand to be watching the app thread as approvals come in and get skipped over, too. I remember sitting and watching the alert emails 'cause I stalked the app thread, what? going, "Uh... hey... you forgot someone...." when ones after mine were getting stamped.

Hopefully it will help a little for people to know what's going on. I mean, privacy's one thing, but obscurity's another. So this way we can have the former but avoid the latter.

I think I can live with that blame. I'd get a kick out of seeing how Daffy does, although really, he needs Bugs to mess with him.

Ahah, I had the old one on alerts, too. I'd do that with the new one, but the idea of my inbox being flooded scares me a little. XD;

I think this is a good compromise. ...Not to mention it's really interesting to read.

Yeah, it really would need a Bugs. Plus, although I consider myself an animation geek, I don't know if I've studied the cartoons enough to portray a character with...THAT much heritage to it.

...I have considered apping Yzma from The Emperor's New Groove, though. I was even collecting icons and screenshots for it at one point.

As far as reviewing goes, they are reviewed in the same tables as the other applications and require the same two mod consensus to receive any form of stamp.
